Chain of Rocks Bridge – Missouri

We had previously walked the historic Chain of Rocks Bridge that crosses the Mississippi River just north of St. Louis Missouri. You can see that post HERE!

So what’s new? Just a few months ago, the Great Rivers Greenway opened up a small park on the Missouri side of the river! Previously, you had to access the bridge from the Illinois side of the river.

The park feels very safe with an entry gate that is a nod to the water intake buildings on the river that can be seen from the bridge. The park also has a pavilion and hosts several events throughout the year.

Route 66 used to cross this bridge and it has now been turned into a pedestrian bridge. It is about a mile from one side to the other.

Also, while we were there, they are currently building the new 270 river bridge that will replace the current bridge that carries vehicular traffic across the Mississippi River. It was neat to see all the barges and cranes working on the bridge.

Be sure to check this place out and it is really cool when the river starts to freeze over (see my previous post!).

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I remember many years ago riding the St. Louis Riverfront Trail to the Chain of Rocks bridge – and riding over the bridge to the Illinois side.
