In June, I joined the Illinois Girl Camper group at Kickapoo State Recreation Area which is just east of Champaign, Illinois. From St. Louis, it was about a 3 hour drive.
This is a fairly large park and it is known for their water activities. This area was once home to a mining operation that has now been turned into 22 lakes. On site is Kickapoo Adventures that rents everything from tubes, kayaks and even electric bikes!
A few of us rented tubes and floated the Sportsman Classic float which is 1.5 miles long. It felt like it went by really quick so next time I would probably choose the Combo float which is 3 miles long. This section of the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River was scenic and peaceful. I highly recommend floating if you are visiting this park.
The other activity that we did was we rode our bikes to the Kickapoo Rail Trestle Bridge. This ride takes you along the park roads, under Interstate 74, past the Vermilion County Fairgrounds and onto the bike trail. You can see our path below.
The trestle was really cool! It spans across the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River.
On Saturday night, the Bistro inside the park had live music, so we all brought our lawn chairs and sat on the lawn. We enjoyed good food and some drinks and dogs are allowed as well!
Overall, I really liked this park and campground. It seems like it has something for everyone. Have you been here before? Leave a comment!

Thank you for your post! This place seems like a good addition to the RVing with Bikes app. I am the co-creator. That app focuses on campgrounds that have access to paved (or hard surfaced) bike trails. Kickapoo Recreation Area seems to fit that description. Do you agree? How long was your bike ride? Did you go on the Kickapoo Rail Trail? I can add this to the app and list you as the contributor. I can even include this blog post, if you agree.
