Henry Lay Sculpture Park – Missouri

My brother was home for the summer as he was preparing to move to Virginia and we decided to take a trip to a place that was highly recommended by a fellow blog reader 🙂

Not far from Louisiana, Missouri is the Henry Lay Sculpture Park which is an extension of St. Louis University.

After parking in the parking lot, we grabbed a map at the kiosk near the playground. We noticed there are bunk houses and read that this place holds retreats and other similar types of events. Within the buildings is a public restroom and water fountain.

We started our hike by heading towards the entrance and seeing the ‘Self Made Man’ sculpture. There are over 11 sculpture that dot the landscape. You can see the location of the sculptures on the map below.

We walked through the prairies and found several sculptures.

From here, we walked the grass trail to Henry’s Lake. My favorite sculpture called ‘Westward Journey’ is found at Henry’s Lake. I enjoyed this sculpture the most since it felt like it was telling a story, had a sense of movement and a great use of space. Two cowboys on horses and a dog hidden in the grass are on this side of the lake while the covered wagon and the larger party is ahead on the other side of the lake.

We then saw the ‘Three Sisters’ and then headed towards the South end of the property to Tranquility Lake.

From here, we made a loop through the natural prairie. This place is dog friendly and Adlai loved it!

The last leg of our walk was through the Art Walk and Story Woods which a had a lot of sculptures.

Overall, I really enjoyed this place and all of the different sculptures. It was fun finding them along the trails and then picking our favorites! Thanks so much for the recommendation!
