Arlington Wetlands – Illinois

Not far from where I live, is a little place called Arlington Wetlands. I honestly had no idea this place existed until I saw it pop up on my Facebook feed. A local group was having a stewardship day so I signed up and picked up trash around the area and along the road!

Arlington Wetlands is just off Interstate 255 in Pontoon Beach. Be sure to turn on Arlington Drive as Google Maps might take you to the other side of the wetland which does not have access.

From the small parking lot, a trail leads to a floating boardwalk over what is now a remnant of the Mississippi River. Huge water lilies cover the water.

The trail then winds through a sand prairie. Did you know you can see a cactus here?! A cactus in Illinois!

This is a great place for a stroll and would be great for kids as it is not to long. I also came back a few weeks later as my mom wanted to come here on Mother’s Day!

Be sure to check it out! Dogs are also allowed!

  1. Easy stroll, neat floating boardwalk over the water lilies (spatterdock). Interesting to see the informational signs regarding invasive species.
