Jeffrey’s Cliffs – Kentucky

We planned a quick weekend getaway to Jeffrey’s Cliffs Conservation and Recreation Area in Hawesville, Kentucky. This place has been on my list to visit for a while now and we decided to stay in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Saturday morning we woke up early and drove the 35 minutes to Jeffrey’s Cliffs. We were the first car in the fairly large parking lot off Willamette Road.

We followed the trail into the woods and at the first split of the trail, we headed to the right to hike the Devils Den Loop.

This loop had a lot of interesting rock formations, but was a bit strenuous! The trail climbed uphill for a bit and weaved around large rock formations.

I loved how the trail hugged the cliffs for a while and then started to descend to Morgan’s Cave. A small waterfall trickled from above the cave and looped back to the start of the loop.

If you want a less strenuous hike, skip the Devils Den part and just hike out and back to Morgan’s Cave which is a pretty flat and short hike.

The next point of interest is a set of stairs and ladders that lead you to the top of Troop 36 Point. There is an easier way to the upper trails so we continued on the lower trails and hiked the Tobacco Cave Loop next.

There is a structure on the cave that they would hang tobacco from to dry. This area has a lot of history so be sure to check it out on their website. Tobacco Cave was spectacular!

From here we headed up the the Mossy Gap stairs. This is the easiest way to reach the upper trails.

Once at the top, you do a little bit of rock scrambling, but after that the hiking is fairly flat. We hiked to each of the four overlooks and took in the warm temperatures and sun!

Once we were done on the upper trails, we hiked out the way we came in and the parking lot was full by this time.

I really enjoyed this park. The nature was stunning and I liked how the lower trials were a bit more challenging than the upper trails. In total we hiked about 6 miles. This park is 100 percent donation funded and volunteer based so consider making a donation from their website! I did! Also, no dogs are allowed so Ellie has to stay home for this trip! Special shout out to Michelle for a fun trip!

There are trail maps online and also at the trailhead.

If you have been to this park, let me know what you thought!
