New Harmony, Indiana

In mid-November, my friend Amy and I met up in New Harmony, Indiana, which is just over the border from Illinois. This National Historic Landmark sits on the banks of the Wabash River and was a religious community in the early 1800s. Today, it is a quaint town with small shops and nearby attractions.

While waiting for my friend to arrive, I grabbed a coffee at Black Lodge Coffee Roasters. It was a very friendly and cozy atmosphere!

There are several historical buildings that have been preserved, so we took our time walking around the small city blocks. This is also a golf cart community, so you can explore the town on a golf cart! They can be rented at the Atheneum Visitors Center, which also has scheduled tours.

The roofless church is also a unique feature in the community. This place felt very peaceful and healing. Take a moment and stroll through the large, ornate gates.

Across the street from the roofless church, hidden behind a wooden fence, is the cutest little park circled around a fountain. When we were there, the trees were changing colors, and it made it almost magical.

Another nearby attraction is the Labyrinth and it is located on the outskirts of town and is a hedge maze. It is free to enter, so have some fun making your way around it!

We also explored Harmonie State Park, which is a sprawling park bordering the Wabash River. There was a large race going on the day we were there, but we hiked a few trails. This park felt long, so be prepared to drive for a bit.

We first headed to the end of the park to walk the Wabash Trail. This is just a short trail with views of the river.

We hiked Trail 6, which is a .75-mile loop trail behind the Cherry Hill picnic area.

We also hiked Trail 5, which is just inside the campground and passes by Little Harmonie Pond and Big Harmonie Pond. I think we got a bit lost on this trail once we were between the two ponds. There were a lot of leaves on the ground and bridges and stairs in the distance that we could not quite figure out since it was hard to find the trail.

We also tried to find the Dog Walk Trail, but I am not sure if we were ever actually on it ☺️. We walked the paved bike path for a bit, then walked around the various trails that crossed in the forest. Either way, it was a nice walk.

Usually, you have to pay a fee to enter Indiana State Parks, but since we were there in the off-season, we didn’t have to pay.

This was the perfect day trip for us. However, there are a lot of bed and breakfasts and even a conference center where you could stay for the weekend!

Amy and I just spent the day here. We said our goodbyes, and I headed back to Illinois, and Any headed back to Tennessee. Anytime together is a great time 🙂
