While traveling north to Illinois Beach State Park, I decided to break up the drive and stop just west of Chicago in Oak Brook, Illinois, and visit the Graue Mill and Museum.

The grist mill opened in 1852 and ground wheat and corn grown by local farmers. It is located on the banks of the Salt Creek. The main level and basement showcases what it was like at the working grist mill was like during the 70 years of operation. The top floor is home to a museum.

The mill sits within the Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve, and you can hop on the trail right at the mill. I hiked the Night Heron Trail along Salt Creek to the Visitors Center, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

The preserve was quite busy with a lot of people walking the trails. You can also ride your bikes on the trails, and dogs are allowed on leashes. The trails are also marked really well!

I crossed the bridge and also hiked the North Island Loop Trail and then followed the Riverbend Trail along Salt Creek. I even saw two blue herons on my walk!

I really enjoyed this place and recommend it to anyone traveling around Chicago! I highlighted the trails I hiked below and the map and more about the area can be found HERE!

Very interesting and pretty! Thanks
