I had previously visited Kankakee River State Park a long time ago, but recently visited again over the summer with the Girl Camper group. This state park is located near Bourbonnais, Illinois about an hour south of Chicago, Illinois. You can see my previous post HERE!
This park stretches out along the banks of the Kankakee River. This park is popular for bicycling as there is a trail that follows the river.

There is a suspension bridge that crosses rock creek so unlike the previous time I was there, the water level was much lower. I hiked down the side of the bank to the creek and then walked to the river.

From there, I headed back to my campsite which was in the Osage loop within the Potawatomi campground. The sides were spacious and most had trees on both sides.

The one activity that we did this time was we kayaked the Kankakee River which I really enjoyed. We used Reed’s as out outfitter and they were great to work with. They do have a no pets rule so Ellie had to stay home this trip. We floated from just north of the Highway 17 bridge to near Aroma park which I think was around 6 miles and took a couple hours.

The river was calm and slow so this float would be perfect for families and smaller children.

This stretch of the river also had homes on both sides so it was really neat to see everyone’s set ups and how they enjoy the river.
Overall, I really enjoyed this tip and floating on the river!

Can you ride right to the trail from the campground? Thanks for your post.

Yes! The bike trail connects to the campground and then follow the river 🙂
