While in Connecticut for work a few months ago, I was looking for something to do since my flight landed around 2pm. I came across the Mark Twain Home & Museum located in Hartford which was about a 20 minute drive from the airport.

A beautiful museum is where you start your tour from. There is two floors that contain information exhibits and even a short movie. There is also a small gift shop inside the museum.

I booked online, but I saw a lot of people walk in and get on the next available tour. There are two tours to choose from and I chose the General House Tour which lasts about 55 minutes and costs $28 at the time. Tour prices and times are listed on their website.
This beautiful Victorian home contains 25 rooms and is where Samuel Clemons (aka Mark Twain) lived with his family for approximately 17 years. He also wrote his most well known novels here including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

While pictures are not permitted inside the home, believe me when I say this home was beyond amazing. I did capture a few pictures of the outside and given the elaborate details on the outside of the home, you can only imagine what the inside looks like. The architectural details were impressive. I really liked the woodworking and the stenciled wallpapers.

We had previously been to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home in Hannibal, Missouri so it was neat to see more related to his life. You can check out my post HERE on that site!
I highly recommend you check this site out. Thanks for reading!
Nice place. Guess the no photo limitation is tough on those selfie folk. Was there a lot of inlay and marble flooring, or just wood that was nicely finished and unique?

Yes to the selfie comment 😂 I remember the foyer entry floor being really need but feel like there was carpet in other rooms.

I have wanted to tour this home ever since I saw the PBS special on Mark Twain. That was years ago! It’s still on my bucket list! I am from Missouri, so I am well acquainted with Mark Twain. Thanks for your post!

Kinda jealous just now. Thanks for dropping this set of photos! This guy is my literary hero of heros. Did the visit include a view of the gazebo out back where he penned a lot of work … or does that even exist any longer?

Love your comment 🙂 I don’t remember seeing a gazebo. The tour really made me want to read the books again 🙂

Realized I was mistaken. The gazebo was at his “summer study” in Elmira, NY.
